The Government has confirmed its plans for local government reorganisation across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, with significant changes set to take effect from April 2028.
Following consideration of three different proposals, the Government has decided that the current 10 councils will be replaced by two new unitary authorities, each responsible for delivering all local council services within their respective areas.
The new councils will cover:
- Leicester, Oadby & Wigston, and parts of Blaby, Charnwood and Harborough
- The remainder of Leicestershire and Rutland
For most residents and landlords within Charnwood, services will transfer to the new Leicestershire and Rutland unitary council. However, several areas in the borough – including Syston, Birstall, Thurmaston and Anstey – will instead become part of the new authority covering Leicester, Oadby & Wigston and surrounding areas.
At this stage, there is no action required from residents or landlords. Existing councils will continue to operate as normal, and day-to-day services will remain unchanged while preparations for the new arrangements continue.
The reorganisation is expected to be implemented from April 2028, with further information and more detailed transition plans to be released over the coming months.
