Smoke Alarms in Rented Properties

From the 1st October 2015 subject to Parliamentary approval, private rented sector landlords will be required to have working smoke alarms on every floor of their property and carbon monoxide alarms in rooms where a solid fuel heating system is installed.

Alarms must be tested at the start of every new tenancy. Landlords who fail to comply with the duties outlined in the regulations may be subject to a civil penalty of up to £5000.

To help landlords prepare for the new laws the Government has provided 500,000 free alarms.

These are available from your local fire & rescue service. Visit www.alarms4life.com for more information or to find your local service.
